Gertrude Powers Lawson

d. April 2, 2016

Gertrude “Trudy” Powers Lawson passed away peacefully at her home Saturday, April 2, 2016 after a long journey with Alzheimer’s.

Trudy was born in 1927 in Simsbury, Connecticut to Lucy and Robert Powers. She is survived by daughters, Cindy Ward of Lynchburg, Terri Bardi of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida; son, Tom Lawson and his wife, Cyndi, of Keller, Texas. Trudy has five amazing grandchildren, Jessica Ward of Lynchburg, Sean Ward of Virginia Beach, Jack Lawson, and Haley and Jessica Goodman, all of Keller, Texas. She also leaves behind her beloved cat, Sassy.

Trudy attended Boston University and was an elementary music teacher for 30 years in Wilton, Connecticut. She retired to Virginia to be near her grandchildren. Her loves were gardening, travel, and spending time at the beach with friends and family. She loved playing bridge with her friends at Stonegate Villas and Timberlake United Methodist Church. She was an inspiration and strength to her family. Her strong faith guided her through the journey of life.

The family would like to thank Centra Hospice for their amazing guidance and support, as well as Generation Solutions for their caring commitment to our mother for several years. We have sincere love and gratitude for a group of “Women Warriors” who have walked by our side and helped to take such loving care of our mother: Laura Ballowe, Gevetta Harris, Edna Hoffman, Nancy Shannon, Jessica Ward, Lisa Williamson, and Veronica Vincent.

A celebration of Trudy’s life will be held April 23, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home’s Lynchburg Chapel. A reception will follow the service in the Commonwealth Room.
