Gladys Hensley Wood

Gladys Hensley Wood, 93, died May 2, 2013 in Bedford Memorial Hospital. Born in Arcadia, VA, she was the daughter of the late Emma Bryant Hensley and the late Walter Marion Hensley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband John Thomas Wood and five brothers and four sisters: Curtis Hensley, Harry Hensley, Roy Hensley, Oliver Hensley, George Hensley, Ethel Markham, Bertha Absher, Nellie Wells, and Nora Hensley.

Gladys joined the Bedford Christian Church in 1940 after her marriage on Christmas Eve, 1939. She was a faithful member and servant of the church for the rest of her life. She was an employee of Sam Moore Furniture Company where she retired in 1985. She enjoyed relationships made there for the remainder of her years. A member of the Rebekah\"™s and an avid reader; she read the newspapers daily and felt that keeping up with current events and politics was essential as she continued her life as a \"good Democrat\".

She is survived by two sons and one daughter: Dr. Gene Wood and his wife Loretta, Seneca SC; Dennis Wood and his wife Alice, Bedford; Joyce Wood Moorman and husband Michael, Bedford. She was the loving grandmother of five grandsons, one step-grandson and one step-granddaughter: Joel Wood, Pawley\"™s Island, SC; Thomas Moorman and his wife Lori, Bedford; Robert Moorman and his wife Elizabeth, Richmond; Andrew Wood and his wife Kate, Hilo, HI; Brent Wood and his wife Luiza, Richmond; Timothy Channel and his wife Margaret, Simpsonville , SC, and Robyn Channel, Bedford. She loved and adored her eight great-granddaughters and one great-grandson, always saving little gifts for them that she had won playing Bingo at Bedford County Nursing Home. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was very proud of her family and her home was always open to relatives and often a vacation destination in the summers where everyone enjoyed \"coming to the country\". Her children and grandchildren looked forward to her corn puddin\"™ on holidays and sweet pickle in the summer.

The family will receive friends Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 6 to 8 pm at Tharp Funeral Home and after the funeral on Sunday at the Moorman farm, 1925 Cobb\"™s Mt. Road, Bedford.

A celebration of Gladys\"™ life will take place at the Bedford Christian Church in Bedford at 2:00 PM on Sunday, May 5, 2013 with interment to follow at Greenwood Cemetery. The Rev. William Moore will be officiating.

The family would like to thank the employees at Bedford Memorial Hospital for the compassionate care given to our mother and also for the excellent care she received at the Bedford County Home where her needs were always met with a smile and often a loving hug.
