Glenn Jefferson

September 2, 1928 — June 4, 2024

Glenn E. Jefferson, Sr., 95, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, June 4.

He is predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Shirley C. Jefferson, his two young daughters, Sandra Lynn and Beverly Gail, his parents, Walter and Ruby, and siblings, Ortwin, Elmer, and Vernell.

Left to cherish his memory are his older sister, Christine Brown, his children Glenn E. Jefferson, Jr. (Frosty) of Lewiston, Idaho, Glenda Sue Lillard (Steve) of Wasilla, Alaska, and Terry W. Jefferson (Julie) of Lynchburg, Virginia; grandchildren, Sarah Bennett (Randy), Laura Thayer (John), Phillip Lillard (Sarah), Laura Lillard (Aaron), Ashley Patenaude (Daniel), Andrew Jefferson (Jessica) and Jessica Spelman (David), 13 great-grandchildren, and many extended family.

He was born in Campbell County and talked about driving a horse and wagon to the farmer's market to sell produce when young. Glenn graduated from Gladys High School and worked as a carpenter for several years prior to selling insurance for a couple of insurance companies. He then sold various types of insurance for Nationwide for 35 years, and some called him the Mayor of Wards Road. He won several awards for selling life insurance. He was instrumental in starting what was to become Hyland Heights Baptist Church and was a charter member. He worked in numerous leadership roles, such as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and on various committees, helping to grow the church beyond their expectations. He was a faithful Gideons International representative for many years, handing out and placing many Bibles in waiting rooms around Lynchburg and the surrounding areas. He worked as a Justice of the Peace for a while and at one time knew most of the State Troopers in the area. He would later work for Tharp Funeral Home into his 80's and watched many of his acquaintances and friends pass through their doors. He enjoyed growing a large garden and making his sons work like dogs (or so they thought), weeding, and throwing out rocks. He enjoyed playing golf with the senior league at Ivy Hills into his nineties, and occasionally shooting his age. He sang in a quartet at church in the early years of the church and later sang with the Good Timers, bringing a smile to many other seniors in the area. He relaxed by watching baseball and golf, pulling for the Braves. He was a salesman at heart and would talk to anyone, especially about his faith. Even after his stroke at 92, he kept a positive attitude and felt that God had something more for him to do. He was proud to be a man of integrity and a dedicated Christian.

We would like to thank the staff at Tate Springs Health and Rehab for their care and service during his stay there. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Gideons International: PO Box 140800 Nashville, TN. 37214, in his name would be appreciated.
