Gloria Emery Phillips, age 99, passed away peacefully at her home in Forest, Virginia on February 27, 2021. She is survived by her 5 loving children, Fred, George, Julie, Richard and Susan and their families, including 16 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Gloria was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Fred Glenn Phillips Sr., and two brothers, Michael and Marcus Emery.
Gloria and Fred moved to Virginia from their hometown of Huntsville, AL shortly after their marriage. They raised their family in Arlington, Virginia, where Gloria was a devout and active member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church. She served for a time as the receptionist to the first Bishop of the Diocese of Arlington, and volunteered in various capacities at St. Thomas More, the Diocesan cathedral.
Retired and residing in Luray, Virginia, Gloria volunteered her time and energies at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. She was also an active member and volunteer of the local chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She then returned to her roots in Alabama where she resided with her daughter, Julie, in Madison. Her final move was to Forest, Va., where she lived with, and was cared for, by her youngest daughter, Susan.
Gloria’s ashes will be buried alongside those of her husband at Beahm’s Memorial Cemetery in Luray, Virginia. The interment and memorial service will be held when the danger of the Corona virus has passed.
