Gloria Makepeace Farrar

Gloria L. Makepeace Farrar, 92, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on April 7, 2024, from natural causes.

She was born on April 13, 1931, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to the late Ernest Davis Layne and Goldie Mae Layne. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her only sibling, Robert Lee Layne.

She was also preceded in death by her husbands, John Milliken Makepeace and James Preston Farrar, and by her son-in-law, Mark Patterson.

She is survived by her children, Lynn Makepeace Patterson of Bedford, VA, John Milliken Makepeace, Jr. (Vladimir) of Arlington, VA, Laurie Ann Chittenden (Mark) of Wake Forest, NC, David Fisher Makepeace (Andrea) of Danbury, CT, 5 grandchildren, Cassandra Fitzgerald (Dave), Robert McGuire, Jr. (Sara), Meagan McGuire (Matt), Michael Chittenden and Aiden Makepeace, 3 great-grandchildren, Kilen Fitzgerald, Dulaney McGuire, and Mackenzie McGuire.

She graduated from EC Glass High School in 1948 and attended Lynchburg College, graduating 1952 with a degree in Religion.  After graduation, she moved to Indianapolis, IN, to work for the headquarters of the Disciples of Christ Christian Churches.  She moved back to Virginia and worked for B&W where she met John Milliken Makepeace, a nuclear engineer at B&W.  After they got married in 1962, they relocated to NY for the start-up of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant.  In NY she was very active in the Peekskill Woman’s Club and the Peekskill United Methodist Church.

Upon her husband John’s retirement, they moved back to Lynchburg, Virginia.  She was very active in the Ageless Wonders (along with her parents), the EC Glass Reunion Committee, and the Lynchburg College Alumni Society.

Later in life she married James Preston Farrar.  They lived at the Summit Retirement Community where they thoroughly enjoyed their twilight years.

She was well-known for her fun-loving spirit and her fondness for sending greeting cards out to her family for every holiday occasion.

A service celebrating Gloria’s life will be conducted April 13, 2024, at 11 am at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg Chapel in Lynchburg, Virginia. A Visitation with the family will be conducted one hour prior to the service.
