Grace Mae Spurgeon Helmer a longtime resident of Roanoke, passed on Saturday, April 8 at the age of 72.
Grace is survived by her daughter, Delta, son, Chris, and three grandchildren, Maddie, Jessica and Alex. She is also survived by her sister Virginia, and brothers Van and Al. She was preceded in death by her husband David George Helmer, her sister Carol, her brother Billy and her parents Cora Mae and Tyler.
Grace was born in Alva, Oklahoma on January 5, 1945. She graduated from Newkirk High School in 1963 and attended Oklahoma State University, where she remained a devoted supporter of the school.
Grace was a long-time volunteer with the Roanoke Chapter National Railway Historical Society, serving as the manager for the souvenir shop at the Virginia Transportation Museum (Roanoke Transportation Museum when she started). Grace also volunteered at the O. Winston Link Museum. She was an accomplished seamstress who worked part time at Piece Goods.
She was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and friend who was known for her hospitality and generosity.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Grace’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association. A celebration of her life will be held at the Virginian Passenger Station, 1402 S Jefferson St, Roanoke, VA 24016, on Wednesday April 12th from 5 to 8 pm.
