Gustav \”Œbuddy\” Stalling Iii

Gustav Heinrich \"Buddy\" Stalling III, 83, of Lynchburg passed away on Friday, May 31, 2013. He was the husband of Carole Harding Stalling for 29 years.

Born February 11, 1930 in Lynchburg, Buddy was the son of the late Gustav H. Stalling Jr., and Eleanor Burdick Stalling.

Buddy was the President and CEO of a third-generation business Stalling, Inc., dealers and processors of leaf tobacco. While based here in Lynchburg, Stalling Inc. had a wide international customer base throughout Western Europe. In 1971, he formed Tomahawk Warehousing Services, LLC and remained as CEO.

Throughout his life, Buddy was involved in many corporate and leadership boards including Central Fidelity Bank, Piedmont World Trade Council, Dark Fired Tobacco Marketing Association, Leaf Tobacco Exporters Association, Central Virginia Processors, and various Stalling, Inc. subsidiaries such as Stalling International Sales, Inc., G. Stalling & Co., and Stalling FSA, Inc.

In the community, Buddy was a board member of the Boonsboro Country Club, Oakwood Country Club and the Florence Crittenton Home. He was also honored to have been appointed by three different governors to serve on the Virginia Port Authority for 10 years.

Buddy was a life-long member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He graduated from Georgetown Preparatory School in Maryland in 1947. He then attended Washington & Lee University before graduating from the University of Virginia in 1951 with a B.S. in Commerce. He proudly served in the United States Air Force during its involvement in the Korean War from 1951-1955 as a First Lieutenant.

In addition to his wife, Carole, Buddy is survived by one son: John Banister Stalling and his wife, Laura, of Lynchburg and three step-children: Harry Leland Lawson IV and his wife, Dona, of Richmond; Laura Trevey and her husband, Sam, of Richmond; Christin Phillips and her husband, Andrew, of Philadelphia, PA. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: William Walker Lawson, Mary Leland Lawson, Carole Hogan Trevey, Catherine Carr Trevey, Samuel Preston Trevey, Jr., Sullivan Gardner Phillips, and Carter Lawson Phillips.

In addition to his parents, Buddy is predeceased by a son, Gustav Heinrich Stalling IV, and his former wife, Ellen Wall Mallan and sister, Eleanor Stalling Turner.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in his honor on Saturday, June 8, 2013, at 10:00 AM at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 710 Clay Street Lynchburg, VA, with the Monsignor J. Kenneth Rush officiating, and a reception to follow. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8:00 PM on Friday, June 7 at Buddy\"™s home, 811 Old Trents Ferry Road, Lynchburg, VA. Private interment services will be held at Spring Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Cross Catholic Church, 710 Clay Street, Lynchburg, Virginia 24504; or the Academy of Fine Arts, 600 Main Street, Lynchburg, VA 24504.
