Gwendolyn Welch Johnson Campbell, 94, of Bedford passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2014, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of The Reverend Eugene Clayton Campbell. They would have celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary this year.
Born July 16, 1919, in Bedford County, she was the daughter of the late James Elmo Johnson and Freddie Welch Johnson. Gwen received her BA from Lynchburg College. She was a much loved elementary school teacher for 30 years. Gwen was an accomplished cook and loved nothing more than sharing food and fellowship with family and friends. She loved poetry, traveling and painting and had a special love of The Peaks of Otter, the mountains she grew up near.
Gwen was a special person who had the opportunity to touch many lives, in a number of communities, in her role as a minister’s wife. Her yearly open-houses are remembered fondly by many. She was a member of The Eastern Star and Thaxton Baptist Church, the very same church she and her husband attended as children.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two sons: Doctor Barry Eugene Campbell and wife Linda and Ted Johnson Campbell and wife Caperton; brother Danny Lee Johnson and wife Nancy and sister-in-law Marjorie; six grandchildren: Jason Eugene Campbell and wife Thea, Andrea Campbell Heapes and husband Bill, Christopher Jacques Campbell and wife Jill, Jedd Patrick Campbell and wife Lori, Clayton David Campbell and wife Promise, Casey Johnson Campbell; 13 great-grandchildren: Carsyn, Meghan, Kylie, Olivia, Jake, Zachary, Kennedy, Lacey, Christian, Bryson, Eli, Laken, and Adolyn.
She is preceded in death by her brother, James Fred Johnson, and her sister, Elnora Johnson Heath.
A Celebration of Gwen’s live will be conducted at 11:00 am Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at Thaxton Baptist Church with the Reverend Mark Beck officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Thaxton Baptist Church.
