Hallie C. Whitten, age 90, of Madison Heights, VA, passed away peacefully Friday, March 10, 2017. She was the loving wife of the late John Raymond Whitten, Sr.
Born June 25, 1926 in Amherst Co., Va., Hallie was the daughter of the late Walter Coleman and the late Sarah Coleman. She worked as a secretary for over twenty years at the Lynchburg Training Center and Hospital while raising three children with her husband. Hallie greatly enjoyed golfing and spent much of her time at the Winton Country Club, of which she was Treasurer of the Women’s Golf Association. Hallie devoted much of her time to her leadership role as the President of the Elon Presbyterian Women of the Church. Her love for children made her a model Den Mother for the Wright Shop Road Cub Scouts.
Surviving Hallie are her three children, Susan Williams, Madison Heights, VA; John Raymond Whitten (Peggy), Powhatan, VA, Christopher Mark Whitten (Linda), Gastonia, NC; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; devoted friend and care giver, Joseph Gordon; her canine companion, Flash.
In addition to her husband and parents, Hallie was predeceased by her brother, Walter Malcolm Coleman, Jr.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Centra Hospice “angels,” Michelle Hudgins and Carla Richeson, for the extensive care and support.
A celebration of Hallie’s life will be held at Elon Presbyterian Church on Friday, March 17, 2017 at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends after the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
