Harold Eugene Maurer, 89, of Forest, VA, died Friday, February 10, 2017. He was the husband of the late Patti Zeigler Maurer.
Born Saturday, July 30, 1927 in Spring Valley, IL, Harold was a son of the late Harold Clarence Maurer and the late Pauline Denny Maurer.
Harold is survived by his children, Laura M. Blondino and her husband, George Leslie Blondino Jr., of Forest, Thomas Maurer and his wife, Virginia Maurer, of Greensboro NC, and his four grandchildren, Kristina and Benjamin Blondino, and Maxwell and Mallory Maurer.
Harold grew up in Peru, IL where music was a major part of his young life having played in his high school marching band, township municipal band, and a local dance band. After high school Harold attended Purdue University where he studied Electrical Engineering and played cornet in their world famous marching band. His professional career started when he moved to California where he designed electronic components for a military fighter aircraft and was later drafted and served two years in the Army. Harold had fond memories of his time in the Army and loved to share his Army stories with friends and family. While in the service Harold met Patti and they were later married in Germany where he was stationed. Upon being discharged Harold attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then both he and Patti attended Purdue University where they received their PhDs. Harold spent most of his career working for NASA, first at the Wallops Flight Facility and later at the Goddard Space Flight Center where his work centered on remote sensing.
In addition to playing cornet, Harold enjoyed genealogy, playing piano, and traveling with his family.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. A celebration of Harold’s life will follow at 7:30 PM.
