Harold Edward Smith, Jr.

CWO2 Harold Edward Smith, Jr., USCG Ret. of Lynchburg went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, December 17, 2023, at the age of 91. He was the husband of Elizabeth Smith for over 70 years.

Harold was born September 28, 1932, in Wilmington, Delaware, a son of the late Harold Edward Smith, Sr. and Evangeline Smith. Harold honorably served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard for 20 years. He then graduated from Thomas Road Bible Institute (Liberty Bible Institute). Over the years he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and a volunteer in the Church Bus Ministry. He worked for Old Time Gospel Hour and Liberty University for 18 years. While serving part time for 10 years in the SOWER Ministry, he and his wife enjoyed RV travel. He was a member of Forest Baptist Church. One of his favorite songs was “Jesus Paid It All”. His favorite bible verse was John 3:16.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother William E. Smith. In addition to his wife he is survived by his three sons Steven E. Smith (Teresa) of Hebron, MD, Sheldon E. Smith (Cathleen) of Whispering Pines, NC and Steward E. Smith of Forest, VA; four grandchildren Steve Smith, Jr. (Kasey), Amanda Smith, Crystal Truitt (Jason), Nicolas Smith; two step-grandchildren Brittni Conn (Steve) and Kelsie Bloodsworth; seven great-grandchildren Gabriel, Joshua, Noah, Sydney, Andrea, Maddox and Dominic; two step great-grandchildren Christian and Ella.

The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, from 1 until 3pm at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, VA.

A celebration of Harold’s life will be held at 2 pm Friday, January 5, 2024, at the chapel of Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home in Middletown, Delaware. Interment will follow at Old St. Anne’s Church Cemetery with full military honors.
