Union Hall

The family and friends of Harriet Martin Castanes are saddened to share the news of her passing on May 14, 2024. But they rejoice in knowing that she has joined God, her heavenly father, and is no longer in pain.

Harriet was born in Roanoke on February 4, 1963, to the late Roy and Doris Martin. Several years later the family moved to Richmond, where Harriet graduated from Manchester High. From there, she continued her education at Radford University, where she graduated with a B.S. degree in Business Management. While at Radford, she met her future husband and devoted partner, Angelo Castanes. Angelo and Harriet lived and raised their children in Bedford County. Harriet worked at Framatome as a contract analyst for 14 years, after which, she devoted her time to raising her children.

Harriet was blessed to have two daughters, Brooke Castanes, of Bedford, and Alexis Castanes, of Alexandria. Harriet’s passion in life was her beautiful family and her furry animals. Two years before her passing, Harriet’s dream came true, when she and Angelo moved to Smith Mountain Lake.

In addition to her parents, Harriet was preceded in death by a sister, Sandra Johnson, and father-in-law, John Castanes.

She leaves behind, her sister, Cynthia Jackson (Jay), of Columbia, SC; her mother-in-law, Peggy Castanes, of Lynchburg; and brother-in-law, Jim Castanes (Karen), of Lynchburg.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the many friends that supported them in a multitude of ways, from sitting with Harriet, sending gifts, text messages, cards, and delivering meals. The family would also like to thank Betty and Amanda with Carillion Hospice for taking special care of Harriet in her last days.

A visitation will be held Monday, May 20, 2024, at 3 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. A memorial service will follow in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg at 4 p.m.
