Harriett Clausen Owens

March 26, 1922 — June 8, 2014

Harriett Clausen Owens of Lynchburg, VA entered Heaven’s gate on Sunday, June 8, 2014 into the arms of Jesus and her beloved sons, Tommy and Ned. She was born March 26, 1922 in Woodstock, VA to Judge Frank S. and Sarah Z. Tavenner. She was predeceased by her parents, husbands Tom Clausen and Robert Owens, her sons Tommy and Ned Clausen, and brother F. Stacey Tavenner. She is survived by her stepchildren R. Hunter Owens (Susan) of Australia, Laura L. Owens of Lynchburg, David J. Owens (Colleen) of Smith Mountain Lake, and John M. Owens of Florida, step-grandchildren, Kieran and Elke Owens, Rokuco Pierce, Hanna Owens and Cosmos Owens, and her devoted friends of many years, Judy and  Greg Kitson and Jeannne Payne.

 

Harriett attended St. Margaret’s School on the Rappahannock. She was a graduate of Sweet Briar College, Amherst, VA. Harriett worked for many years until her retirement at the University of VA, first as secretary to the late President Edgar Shannon, and later to the Deans of the School of Engineering. Harriett and her late husband, Bob, spent many happy years at the home they built on the shores of Smith Mountain Lake. Friends and relatives were only too happy to come for a visit to enjoy their hospitality and the delicious meals that Harriett prepared. She was grateful for the friendships and kindness shown to her at The Summit through the years and the loving care provided to her at The Summit Health and Rehab.

 

Interment of ashes will be June 17, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Massanutten Cemetery, Woodstock, VA. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Ecumenical Parish, 40 Lakemount Drive, Moneta, VA 24121 on June 23, 2014 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Dr. Gary Scheidt officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Ecumenical Parish or Lake Christian Ministries, 13157 Old Moneta Road, Moneta, VA 24121. Services are being provided for the family by Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory of Lynchburg, 434-237-9424.
