Hazel Brightwell Keyes

Hazel Kathleen Brightwell Keyes, 99, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012, the wife of the late Edwin Carroll Keyes to whom she was married to for 59 years.

 Hazel was born April 29, 1913 in Madison Heights. She was the daughter of the late Edgar and Edna Lee St. John Brightwell.

 She is survived by 3 daughters: Ann Gillespie, Deborah Schwartz and her husband, Mike, Dr. Emily Keyes, and husband, Bruce Nave, a son: Edwin C. Keyes, Jr.; 9 grandchildren: Robert Gunter, Angela Shaver, John Gillespie and wife Lauren and Wayne Gillespie, Jennifer Page, Dorian Page, Ryan Womack and Ashley Womack, Kelsey Schwartz; 5 great-grandchildren: Kaytlin Shaver, Olivia Draper and Wilson Draper, Eric Hood, and Mason Gillespie.

 After completing her formal education, Mrs. Keyes managed and directed business ventures for varying enterprises. In her twenties, she met the love of her life, married and became the matriarch of a large spirited family.   During those years, she further developed her interests and talents as a pianist, and a talented, created culinary artist. She had a green thumb extraordinaire who delighted at the blossoming of each lovely flower, vegetable, plant, and tree that flourished with her loving touch.

 Mrs. Keyes also loved to travel, flying across the country with her husband several times, and visiting all states, Canada and other places special to her and her family.

 Mrs. Keyes had an enduring strength of will combined with a sensitive, caring heart.   In addition, she had a lively sense of humor and when she told humorous stories, her infectious laughter brightened the days and lives of everyone with whom she came in touch. She had a beautiful visage with naturally chestnut brown hair, the color of which remained unchanged through her 99 years. She was a devoted Christian with strong faith who looked forward to her homecoming in eternity with the Lord.

 A visitation will be held on Friday, June 8 from 6:00 \"" 8:00 pm at Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory, Lynchburg. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 9 at 1:00 pm in Tharp Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
