Hazel Coleman

Hazel V. Coleman, 91, of Lynchburg, VA, passed peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, August 02, 2010. She was the wife of the late Alfred Clifton Coleman.

Hazel was born Wednesday, November 27, 1918 in Landgraff, WV, a daughter of the late John Percy Vaughan and Virginia Brown Vaughan. She was retired from Central VA. Community College Book Store, and was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Lynchburg.

Hazel is survived by her children; Elizabeth C. \"Betty\" Mason, of Lynchburg, VA, Alfred C. \"Buzzy\" Coleman and his wife, Martha Anne, of Big Island, VA, Joseph H. \"Joe\" Coleman and his wife, Anne, of Forest, 13 grandchildren, Dr. Elizabeth Darby and her husband, Jim, of Lynchburg, James Lee \"Bim\" Mason and his wife, Cathi, of Bedford, Hazel C. Mason-Hamilton, of Lynchburg, VA, Jennifer Clair Mason, of Lynchburg, Wesley Clifton Mason and his wife, Stacie, of Lynchburg, William J. \"BJ\" Coleman, of Lynchburg, Clifton M. \"Matt\" Coleman and his wife, Jamie, of Lynchburg, Alfred C. \"Clif\" Coleman, III and his wife, Melissa, of Big Island, David T. Coleman and his wife, Collie, of Big Island, Benjamin V. Coleman and his wife, Carly, of Big Island, Johanna H. Coleman, of Big Island, Michael D. Bryant and his wife, Margaret Ann, 23 great grand children; and five great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, and her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Coleman Bryant, a grandson, Brandon B. \"Brandino\" Coleman, two sisters Louise V. Stevens and June V. Deseager, a brother, William V. Vaughan, and a son in-law James L. Mason.

Hazel moved to Lynchburg at the tender age of six. After their father\"™s sudden death, the children grew up together at the Odd Fellows Home, where they met many life long friends.

After finishing school she married Alfred C. Coleman, a handsome young man with a talent for building. Together they stayed busy entertaining family and friends and raising their four children.

Hazel also enjoyed the garden club, The Suburban Woman\"™s Club, playing bridge, and monthly meetings with the girls from the Odd Fellows Home, sewing, embroidery and many wonderful trips with her sisters.

Hazel lived for fifty-five years at 517 Trent\"™s Ferry Road. A beautiful home with many beautiful memories of Thanksgiving and Christmas, lazy summer days on the porch, the smells of wonderful meals, the sounds of home overflowing with children playing, chatter and laughter of family gatherings. Life is good!

A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 06, 2010 at Tharp Funeral Home with the Rev. C. Douglas Pillow officiating. Interment will follow in Presbyterian Cemetery.

Following the committal service the family will receive friends at the home of Joe and Anne Coleman.
