Hazel O. Carter

May 21, 1929 — June 20, 2017

Hazel Virginia Orange Carter, 88 of Thaxton, passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born in Bedford County on May 21, 1929. She was a daughter of the late Sonnie Melvin Orange and Nannie Alice Nester Orange. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Luther Carter; two son-in-laws, Bill Nester and Wayne Carter and five siblings.

Hazel was a member of Cool Springs Pentecostal Holiness church. She loved the outdoors and could often be found mowing her grass, working in the garden or her flowers. She often went for long walks. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She retired from Bedford weaving mill after 26years of employment.

Hazel is survived by her six children, Peggy Nester, Joyce Carter, Ronnie Carter and wife, Rickie, James “Blu” Carter and wife, Debbie, Linda Savage and husband, Vann and Debora Carter; six grandchildren, Rhonda, Anthony, Teresa, Shannon, Jonathan and Keith; 4 great-grandkids, Destiny, Sydney, Raeven and Katye; two sisters, Pauline Burton and Edith Dooley; two very special friends, Manuel Dooley and Teresa Hodges; also numerous nieces, nepews and other friends.

A service and celebration of Hazel’s life will be conducted at 11:00 am on Friday, June 23, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Chapel with, Pastor Eric Pennington officiating. Burial will follow in the Carter Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Thursday, June 24, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Home Bedford.
