Helen Alice Guerra

May 27, 1920 — June 28, 2017

Helen Alice Guerra, 97, of Lynchburg, Va., went to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 28, 2017 with her family by her side. She was the loving wife of the late Vincent John Guerra.

Helen was born Thursday, May 27, 1920 in Newburg, N.Y., a daughter of the late James Ruggiero and the late Anna Ruggiero.

Helen is survived by her daughters, Elisa Burton (Camp) of Lynchburg, Va. and Stephanie Guerra-Brown of Richmond, Va; grandchildren, Willie H. Morris (Heide) of NYC and Ashley Kennedy (David) of Seattle, Wash.; nieces, Roseanne Scarry (Jimmy) Jeannie Guerriero, of N.Y.; Ann Guerra, Angela Demo (John) of South Carolina; her God-daughter, Deloras Brivio (Bob) of N.Y.; and a host of other nieces, nephews, and cousins. Helen touched the lives of so many people and will be missed by her best friend, Iretta Pannell. Helen was a lifelong church goer and loved the energy of Rev. Msgr. Michael D. McCarron’s masses. In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband and infant daughter, Linda Ann.

Helen and her late husband, Vincent, had a storybook romance that took them from New York, around the globe, and finally to Lynchburg, Virginia. Helen also enjoyed the snow bird life and had a blast at her condo in Boca Raton, Florida. Many remember her as the life of the party for almost a full century – her dancing shoes were always on. Helen always relished giving her time to bring joy to those around her and in earlier days, she was one of the flower ladies at Virginia Baptist hospital. On Sunday evenings you could often find her singing along with her second love, Frank Sinatra, while she was cooking up a batch of her famous lasagna. Helen’s greatest gift, though, was her devotion to her family as she dedicated much of her life to lovingly raising her two daughters and to one of her greatest joys, her grandson Willie.

The family would like to thank the staff at Summit Assistant Living and Westminster Canterbury who lovingly cared for Helen both night and day.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, July 3, 2017 at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Michael D. McCarron officiating. Reception to follow. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery, 4920 Laurel Hill Boulevard, Woodside, N.Y. at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 3015 Roundelay Road, Lynchburg, Va., 24502.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
