A mass of resurrection to celebrate the life of Helen Felitto, the sister of Elizabeth Crandall Smither will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. with Monsignor Michael McCarron officiating. The visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church prior to the service.
Helen, a life-long resident of New York City, spent most vacations and holidays in Lynchburg visiting her sister and nephews. Known for her keen mind and sharp wit, she loved lively and engaging conversations and she always participated to the fullest.
Helen\"™s educational foundation began at Utica Catholic Academy in upstate New York, which allowed her to thrive at the College of New Rochelle. After graduating from the College of New Rochelle, Helen began her life\"™s work in New York City and the surrounding communities. She soon realized the advantage of higher education and earned her Master\"™s Degree from Fordham University. Not willing to stop with a Master\"™s, she continued her education at Columbia University and the New School for Social Research.
After many years working with Sheltering Arms Children\"™s Service in New York, Catholic Home Bureau and the Family and Children\"™s Department of the Brooklyn Bureau of Community Services where she was director, Helen joined the staff of the Child Welfare League as a National Consultant in Field Service. This job took Helen around the world. There are few countries that she had not visited.
During her career Helen was often honored; these honors include listings in the 5th, 6th, and 7th editions of Who\"™s Who of American Women.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Rose Felitto of New York, her brother Joseph Felitto of Florida, and her brother Raymond Felitto of Connecticut. She is survived by her sister Elizabeth Crandall Smither of Lynchburg, her nephews J. Gregory Crandall (Lisa Schenkel), Steven M. Crandall, Kevin W. Crandall (Becky), all of Lynchburg, her niece Mary Crandall Alexander (Alan) Keaau, Hawaii; nephew Bryan Felitto (Joan) of New York, nephew Raymond Felitto (Jean) of Florida; and many other great nieces and nephews.
