Hellen Purkrabek Winters died Monday, December 13 in Lynchburg, Virginia. She was the wife of the late Captain Theodore Hugh Winters, Jr.
She was born March 15, 1918, in Annapolis, Maryland. She was the daughter of the late Vincent Paul Purkrabek and the late Christina Pekna Purkrabek. She is survived by three daughters, Susan Winters McKenry and her husband, James R. McKenry, of Virginia Beach, Holly Winters Perrow and her husband, Mosby G. Perrow, III, of Lynchburg and Hamlin Winters Harritos of Clemson; ten grandchildren, Henry Steele Lewis, III, Hugh Winters Lewis, Christopher Lewis, Chamie Grandy Valentine, Christina Selden Grandy, Hellen Perrow Carrington, Alexandra Perrow Wood, Mosby Garland Perrow, IV, Katherine Harritos Gorretti and Amy Winters Harritos; and fifteen great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Christina Winters Lewis.
Hellen enjoyed several hobbies, especially sewing, golf and bridge, but her special talent was making wonderful homes for her four daughters all over the country and world as she followed her husband, Hugh, on his many U.S. Navy assignments. Hellen loved to be with children and was never happier than when with as many great grandchildren as she could accommodate on her lap, floor, bed and later in life, hanging on her wheelchair.
The family wishes to express its appreciation for the care and support given by the Gentle Shepherd Hospice and the sixth floor Drinkard Westminster-Canterbury staff. Hellen loved the staff and they were so caring in their love for her, especially Mary Alice, her special caretaker.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Friday, December 17, at the Westminster-Canterbury chapel and, afterwards, a reception in the Hume Room for family and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery.
