Henry Bethel Stamps

Henry Bethel Stamps of Forest, VA died on April 24, 2012. At VA Baptist Hospice in Lynchburg, VA after a brief illness.

Born in 1925 in Monterey, TN \"where the hilltops kiss the sky\". He was the youngest and last remaining of the 13 children of Lee Monroe Stamps and Dora Henry Stamps. He was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Naval Intelligence. Later he went to work as a civilian at Naval Security Group Headquarters in Washington, D.C. This was the predecessor of the National Security Agency which later relocated in Ft. Meade, MD where he remained until his retirement in March 1980. He was a member of the Lynchburg Amateur Radio Club, the ROC Net (his call name W3PKL), the Phoenix Society, the \"Grumpy Old Men\" of Forest United Methodist Church, and the Retired Newcomers Group; he was also a charter member of the Chatham Marconi Wireless Museum, and of the U.S. Naval Memorial in Washington, D.C. Besides his interest in all things radio, he was an avid photographer, and enjoyed playing the guitar and banjo. He enjoyed playing golf also until a back injury prevented him from playing. He was devoted to God and country, and he loved and cherished his family and friends. He lived his life with integrity, honesty, loyalty, joy, and humility.

He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 65 years, Mary Vallastro Stamps, his only daughter Marilyn Stamps Luckhard and her husband Robert Earl Luckhard, and their son, his only grandchild Michael Robert Luckhard, as well as numerous extended family members.

Visitation will be held at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg on Sunday May 13, from 6:00 til 8:00 p.m. The Memorial Service and Celebration of his Life will be held on Monday, May 14, at 3:00 p.m. at the Forest United Methodist Church and will be conducted by Pastor Bill Burleigh and military honors to be performed by American Legion Post #16.
