Henry G. Martin, 85, of Monroe, passed away on Friday, December 25, 2020 under hospice care at Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born in New Jersey on June 12, 1935.
He is preceded in death by his sons, Charlie Martin and Jeff Martin, and his brother Herbert Martin.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth V. (Ginny) Martin and children, Linda Martin, Patricia Johns (Percy), John Martin, Scott Martin (Brenda), Peggy Jones (Joey) and Chris Martin, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his sister-in-law, Kay Martin and nephews, Rusty Martin and Randy Martin.
After moving his family from New Jersey to Virginia in 1969, his career life continued to take him on many adventures starting with being a photo journalist for Lynchburg News and Advance, to owning a swimming pool business (H.G. Martin & Sons), to making weekly east-to-west coast truck deliveries for Englander Woodstoves and driving trucks for other companies. The family currently owns a horse boarding business (Brierfield stables) which allowed him to share his love for animals. His hobbies throughout his life included fishing, boating and woodworking (he made anything from jewelry boxes to furniture). Once holding a private pilot license, his love for the aircraft continued with collecting model airplanes (and trains) and later enjoyed flying drones. He enjoyed making new friends, telling stories and sharing history of his home and family. Most of all, he enjoyed anytime he could spend with his family.
It was his wish to donate his body to science. No service is planned at this time.
