Herbert A. Dowdy

April 6, 1941 — October 25, 2018

Herbert Arthur “Bubber” Dowdy, 77, of Coleman Falls, Virginia passed from death unto eternal life on Thursday, October 25, 2018, at Lynchburg General Hospital.  He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, on April 6, 1941, and was the son of the late Herbert Marshall and Belle Joyner Dowdy. He grew up in the Fort Hill community and attended Fort Hill United Methodist Church in his youth.  He is survived by his wife, Onormorreer “Ona” Turner Dowdy; his sisters, Marsha Dowdy Garrison and Sue Dowdy Worsham; and his brother-in-law, Tuck Worsham. Also surviving are nieces; Jennifer, Karin (Ronnie), Grace (Ray), Amanda (Jens), and Kirsten (Bob) and nephew, Tucker (Cyndi) and numerous great-nieces and nephews.  He was especially close to his great-nephew, Rives Worsham. “Uncle Bubber” was truly loved by them all.

Herb graduated  from E.C. Glass High School and NCR Technical School.  He retired from IKON Office Solutions after a career of servicing office equipment in the Central Virginia area.  Upon his retirement in 2006, he had logged over 750,000 miles in his “Copy Doc” Volvo.

Herb was blessed with a variety of gifts and talents. He loved being outside mowing grass, chopping wood, riding his tractor and washing cars.  Equally talented inside the house, Herb enjoyed cooking (He made the best buttermilk biscuits!), ironing and vacuuming. He had the ability to fix almost anything and always enjoyed the process of taking things apart and putting them back together.  He was a handyman to many.

Herb loved animals and had a multitude of faithful companions (including his dog, Sydney, and his cat, Yoda waiting for him on the Rainbow Bridge).  His beloved cat, Flea, mourns his passing.

He enjoyed travel (once the plans were made for him).  He particularly enjoyed the six cruises he and Ona took to Bermuda.

Herb was a devoted and loving husband, who exhibited his love every day through his words and actions.  Ona knows he was a gift from God and will forever treasure the years they had together. She is sustained by the knowledge that she will, one day, be reunited with him in Heaven.

The family would like to thank all of the staff of the Medical ICU at Lynchburg General Hospital for their wonderful and compassionate care during the eighteen days Herb waged his battle.  A special thank you is given to Jordan, Sara and Heather, the nurses who cared for him for many days.

A memorial service to celebrate Herb’s life will be held at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg on Sunday, November 4, 2018, at 3:00 p.m.  Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. The service will be conducted by Rev. Allan Monfils, who married Herb and Ona on July 15, 2000.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Big Island Volunteer Fire Company, PO Box 122, Big Island, VA 24526.

2 Timothy 4:7-8   “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
