Herbert George Smith, 84, of Forest, Va., passed away Tuesday, September 27, 2016.  He was the loving husband to Glenice V. Howe Smith for 61 years, who survives him.

He was a son of the late Frank Harvey Smith and the late Myrtle Mae Skinner Smith. Herb was preceded in death by his brother Donald Smith, of N.Y.  and his sister Marjorie Gray, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Herb was born January 26, 1932, in Walton, N.Y.  He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1971. He retired as an E-9/MCPO, Master Chief Petty Officer Smith. In 1971 he began working for B & W, in Lynchburg; his employment with the company led him to work in the Field Service Organization. He stayed with B & W until he retired in 1984, it was then he chose to start a career in consulting which he enjoyed from 1984 to 1995.

In addition to his wife, Herb is survived by his children, Donald W. Smith (Elizabeth) of Lynchburg, Va., and Lori Smith Jennings of Moneta, Va.; two grandchildren, Doug Stewart (Stefanie) of Roanoke, and Chase Stewart (Nicky) of W.Va.; five great-grandchildren, Devon, Connor, Daxton, Madison and Raelynne Stewart; special to the family are, Ray Peacock (Linda) of Arkansas and Dennis Stewart (Deborah) of Appomattox, Va.

The family would like to give special thanks to Christine Johnson with Generation Solutions, Centra Hospice for their loving care and support, and to their dear neighbor Mary Eubank for all her help.

The family extends an open visitation to all, on Sunday October 2, 2016, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg and also on Monday October 3, 2016 from 8 to 11 a.m. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday October 3, 2016 in Virginia Memorial Park, Forest, Va. with Pastor Ray Kingrea officiating, military honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy.
