Herbert L. Brown, Sr.

Herbert L. Brown, Sr., 81, of Lynchburg, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 5, 2011, after a long illness.

Mr. Brown was born Friday, May 31, 1929 in Lynchburg, a son of the late George H. Brown and Eugie Hailey Brown.  He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and retired from General Electric with 28 years of service.  He was a member of Chestnut Hill Baptist Church.  Herbert loved his music and played bass with many Grand Ole Opry stars including Buck Owens, Dottie West, Connie Smith, Jean Shephard, Tex Ritter and others.  His greatest enjoyment came from playing music locally alongside his son who plays drums.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean Stinnett Brown, his son, Herbert Brown, Jr., and wife, Cheryl; his daughter, Tanya B. Burge and husband, Jeff; his granddaughters, Abby and Emily Brown, his grandson, Ryan Burge and wife Audrey, serving in the U.S. Navy, his brothers-in-law, Jimmy Shearer and Carl H. Stinnett and wife, Earline; and his sisters-in-law, Doris Brown and Reba S. Searcy and husband, John.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Baby Girl Brown, a brother, George Haywood Brown, Jr., a sister-in-law, Sheryl Shearer, and a brother-in-law, David Stinnett.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, January 6, 2011, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A celebration of Herbert's life will be conducted at 2:30 PM on Friday, January 7, 2011, in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy J. Bower officiating.  Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
