Herbert ‘Reed’ Lyons, 89, of Lynchburg passed away January 3, 2021. He was born on April 26, 1931 in Monroe, Virginia. He was the son of the late Clarence E. and Hallie J. Lyons.
Reed is survived by three sisters, Della Lyons Will of Madison Heights, Virginia, Edith Lyons and Shirley Lyons both of Lynchburg, Virginia, and a brother, Jack W. Lyons (Vivian) of Monroe. He is also survived by a sister-in-law Freda Lyons of Norton and numerous nieces and nephews. Reed was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Irene and siblings Kenneth G. Lyons, Sr., Cecil D. Jennings and Ruby L. Lyons as well as a brother-in-law Francis Lee Will.
Reed graduated from the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind in Staunton, Virginia in 1952. He was an active alumnus and enjoyed attending reunions. Reed began his career as a printer and then worked for Washington National Bank in Washington, DC where he met his wife, Irene. They moved to Goode, Virginia where Reed worked for Kroger (formally known as Westover) Dairy until his retirement in 1993.
Reed was an avid gardener along with his late wife, Irene. His large gardens are a fond memory for his nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed watching the Lynchburg single A baseball team. Reed was a member of the Living Word Deaf Church in Forest, Virginia.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care Reed received by the compassionate staff of Heritage Green in Lynchburg where he resided until his death.
