Herman Robert Schenkel, Jr.

Herman Robert Schenkel, Jr., 80, of Lynchburg, died on Monday, October 29, 2012, with his family by his side. He was the husband of Winnifred Schenkel for 58 years.

 

Born Tuesday, August 23, 1932, on Long Island, NY, he was the son of the late Herman Robert Schenkel and the late Lillian Locker Schenkel.

 

Herman was a 1954 graduate of Cornell University where he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity. After graduation from Cornell University, Herman served in the US Naval Reserves and then came to Lynchburg where he joined the family business.

 

Bringing beauty to Lynchburg, he was the owner of H.R. Schenkel, Inc. Blue Ridge Roses, as well as a Board member of several national and international flower growers\"™ organizations. He also served as a Director of the Robert E. Lee Soil and Water Conservation District, President of Keep Lynchburg Beautiful, and was a member of the Lynchburg Rotary Club.

 

Herman volunteered with the Lynchburg Tree Stewards, Daily Bread, and Habitat for Humanity.

 

At heart he was a conservationist who loved nature, the outdoors, and animals.

 

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry.

 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Lisa L. Schenkel & her husband Gregg Crandall, Daniel W. Schenkel & his wife Jennifer, and Caroline S. Hamilton & her husband Dan, and five grandchildren: Clair, Tice, Lindsay, Jake and Stori, and a sister; Marianne S. Scholes & her husband Norman.

 

A memorial service will be conducted by the Rt. Reverend Marion Kanour, Saturday November 3, 2012 at Trinity Episcopal Church at 11:00 am, followed by a celebration of Herman\"™s life.
