Hilda Sophie Brown

March 7, 1927 — February 7, 2015

On the evening of February 7, 2015, Hilda “Nana” Sophie Brown passed away at Lynchburg Rehabilitation Center, in the company of family members. At the time of her home going Hilda was one month shy of 88 years old.

Hilda Brown was born on March 7, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY, the first of two daughters of Hedwig and William Stockinger. She graduated from Babylon High School forming close, lifelong friendships. She went to work at The Equitable Life insurance in NYC, where an office boy by the name of Whitey Ford would later pitch for her beloved NY Yankees.   On a blind date she met her future husband of 55 years, Alfred ‘Sonny’ Thomas Brown, Jr, and they were surprised by twin boys Thomas and David in 1955. She enjoyed travel, both on their restored antique boat “DWAI” (Don’t Worry About It) with their dog Fang on which they cruised the Great South Bay and the Hudson and Mohawk rivers. Later in life they traveled in the company of other seniors on many bus trips. Nana was an avid sports fan throughout her life, following her favorites in each sport (and occasionally rooting against the select few that earned it.)   She was a longtime member of the Sweet Hollow Presbyterian church in Huntington, NY, and after moving to Virginia to be near ‘her boys’, was a Charter member of the Forest Alliance Church.

Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, Hedwig and William Stockinger, husband, Alfred Brown Jr, and sister, Wilma Frank and great niece Jennifer Wheeler.

Hilda is survived by her son Thomas and his wife Marcella, her son David and his wife Joyce, her grandchildren Ricky Lowe, Jamie Lowe, Eric Lowe, Ruth Horazeck, Paul Brown, Sarah Waterman, Daniel Brown and Aaron Brown, 12 great grandchildren, nephew William Frank, niece Laurie Frank, great niece Melissa Wheeler, and her lifelong friends Doris Doyle and Ruthie Bronnenkant.

Viewing will be held Thursday, February 12 at 6:00 pm at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg, with a service in the chapel to follow at 7:30 pm. A graveside service will be at the Culpeper National Cemetery on Friday, February 13.   A special thanks to the staff at Bentley Commons and Lynchburg Health and Rehabilitation Center for their care.
