Deacon Houston "Skip" G. Haskins, passed away after a short illness on Friday, August 2, 2024 at Guggenheimer Nursing Home in Lynchburg, Va. Houston was born on August 1, 1955 to the late James B. Haskins, Sr. and Etta Mae Stratton Haskins. In addition to his parents, Houston was preceded in death by his brothers, James B. Haskins, Jr., and Leon "Sonny" J. Haskins and five sisters: Peggy Jones, Joyce Ware, Janie Brown, Eldridge Brown and Barbara Ann Harris.
Houston joined the church at an early age. He attended Campbell County High School and later joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a devoted member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church until he moved to Evington and joined Mt. Evergreen Baptist Church. He was a member of the Deacon Board, Men's Chorus and the Sunlight Senior Choir.
Houston is survived by his loving wife, Yolanda. He is also survived by his three children: Jermaine Haskins (Jennifer), Sheena Haskins and Mario Haskins (Lakeshia); one step-daughter, Victoria Canada; brother: Bobby Stratton, Sr. (Mary) of Lynchburg, sister: Norma Jean Gilbert (Lewis) of Rustburg, Va., sisters in law: Jennifer Creasy (Frank), Jacqueline Blair (Harry); and five grandchildren: Chikiah, Nathan, Samaya, Saraya, and Emiayah. He also leaves to cherish his memory a host of nieces and nephews, and a family friend, Ms. Linda Seigla.
The family will be receiving friends and family for a visitation at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, on Aug. 8, 2024 from 6 P.M.- 8 P.M. and a Service will be held at Mt. Evergreen Baptist Church on Aug. 9, 2024 at 1 P.M. with an interment to follow at the church cemetery.
