Howard “Bud” Dimter

Howard Winfield Dimter, 88, died peacefully at home at the Summit, in Lynchburg, Virginia, on October 6, 2011. He was born July 9, 1923 in Philadelphia, the son of August and Mabel Dimter, and brother of the late Margaret Lesseig.

Known to his friends and family as \"Bud\", he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served proudly in the Pacific in WWII. He fully utilized his training from the Navy during his years of employment with Hershey Corporation, US Steel Fairless Works, and the U.S. Air Force Base in Homestead, FL.

Bud was devoted to his wife of 67 years, Dorothy. They resided in Langhorne, PA, Homestead, FL, Edgewater, FL and most recently Lynchburg, VA.

After the war Bud was active in the American Legion Jesse W. Soby Post #148, Langhorne, PA, and remained a Lifetime Member. He was also a member of the Bradford Rod and Gun Club for many years and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and training his German shorthaired pointers. During retirement Bud and Dot enjoyed travel throughout the United States and attended many reunions with members of the USS Eastland.

In addition to his wife, Bud is survived by his three children, Howard Dimter(Sandra), Lynchburg, VA., Nancy Messick (William), New Hope, PA, Kim Duncan (Kenneth), Douglasville, GA; nine grandchildren; Howard Dimter (Julianna), Matt Dimter (Francine), Ben Maxwell (Stephanie), Christopher Messick (Karen), Jennifer Zimmerman (Andrew), Amy Povemba, Angie Messick, Benjamin Duncan, and Michael Duncan. He was also proud of his ten great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, VA. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at later date.
