Howard L. Maxey, Sr.

Howard L. Maxey Sr, 69, of Rustburg passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 1, 2021.

He was born on April 27, 1952 in Buckingham County.  The son of the late William Jennings Maxey Jr and Lula Maxey.  He grew up as one of the middle children in a family of 13 siblings.  The stories of his childhood and adolescent adventures were a common pastime and a source of many laughs throughout the years.

He was an avid fan of professional wrestling, going fishing, sitting outdoors on a nice swing, and imitating as many animal sounds that he could in order to “talk” with them.  His humble and outgoing nature was shown each and every day in his willingness to help whenever he saw a need and to strike up a conversation with anyone he came across.  He did not know the definition of the word “stranger” as everyone he came across was just a new friend he hadn’t met yet.

Along with his favorite past times, he enjoyed 37 wonderful years with the love of his life, Brenda Maxey who will miss his smiles and daily companionship.  He gained immense joy from his son Howard Maxey Jr (Rebecca), his step daughter Stephanie Gunter, step son Daniel Gunter (Suzanne) along with 9 grandchildren.  His infectious smile and sense of humor along with general ribbing of each of them will be fondly remembered.

In addition to his immediate household, he is survived by his sisters Lillian Purdy, Hilda Newton, Rose Tyree, Elizabeth Elder, Ruby Pearl Nettles; Brothers Tommy Maxey, Charles Maxey, and John Maxey as well as many nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his sister Doris Thompson and brothers Roy Lee Maxey, Kenneth Maxey, and William J Maxey.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in the spring of 2022.  Family and friends will be provided updated information closer to that time.
