Howard Louis Davies

Howard \"Howie\" Louis Davies, 69, of Roanoke, formerly of Moneta, passed away on, Friday, December 30, 2011 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born in Rochester, NY on August 28, 1942, he was a son of Mary Wellman and the late Louis Davies.  In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Schmalzbauer.

Howie served his country as a U.S. Marine from 1959 to 1962 during peacetime; he was a motorcycle police officer with the Rochester, NY Police Dept. from 1967 to 1988 (retired) and a Deputy for the Bedford County Sheriff\"™s Office from 1997 to 2005 (retired); he was a member of both the Rochester, NY Police Locust Club and the Rochester, NY Police Dept. Benevolent Association; past president and founder of Stone Mt. Bass masters Fishing Club, Smith Mountain Lake, VA; a member and past secretary of the Bedford County Deputy Sheriff\"™s Association; a member of the VA Fraternal Order of Police and the John Lynch Lodge #34 of Lynchburg, VA; he was also a member of the Bedford County Mason Lodge #244; he was past president of Greer\"™s Ford Subdivision Association; a former firefighter with the Smith Mountain Lake Marine Volunteer Fire Co., Boat #7 and a firefighter with the Saunders Volunteer Fire Company; he was a life member of the U.S. Marine Corps. League, Bedford, VA Detachment; and a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, Moneta, VA. In addition to his family, Howie loved model trains, fishing and NASCAR.

Howie is survived by one daughter, Marie Davies Benitez and husband, Sergio, of Roanoke, VA; a grandson, Darren Davies of Roanoke; a granddaughter Jovanna Davies Benitez of Roanoke; a brother, Bill Davies and significant other, Sue Hawley, of Kill Devil Hills, NC; his mother, Mary Wellman; a stepmother, Helen Davies, of Kill Devil Hills, NC; an uncle, Donnie Davies and wife, Judy, of Rochester, NY; and a niece, Cori Davies, of Kill Devil Hills, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Saunders Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 14, Huddleston, VA 24104.

A funeral service will be held by Father Steve McNally at 4 pm on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at Resurrection Catholic Church, Moneta.
