Howard Watson Pettyjohn, 89, of Lynchburg, VA, passed away Friday, February 24, 2012, at the Summit. He was the husband of the late Evon Gentry Pettyjohn for 69 years.
Born Friday, September 15, 1922 in State Road, NC, Howard a son of the late Samantha Moody Pettyjohn and the late Pleasant Watson Pettyjohn.
Howard is survived by two sons: Stephen G. Pettyjohn and his wife, Betty, of Lynchburg, and David H. Pettyjohn and his wife, Shelia, of Concord, NC; grandchildren: Todd Pettyjohn and his wife, Annette, of Lynchburg, and Whitney Rogers and her husband, Stacy, of Richmond, VA; four great-grandchildren: Daniel and Hannah Pettyjohn of Lynchburg, and Zachary and Molly Rogers, of Richmond; a sister Ruth Newman of Littlestown, PA.
In addition to his wife and parents, Howard was preceded in death by five brothers: Brady, Worth, Arvil, Raymond, and Harvey Pettyjohn; and a sister, Lillian Holcomb.
Howard was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was co-owner of Pettyjohn Brothers Shoes. He was a 60 year member and past Master of the Hill City Masonic Lodge # 183, a member of the Scottish Rite, and Roanoke Kazim Temple, Past President of the Lynchburg Shrine Club, Past Director of Bank of Virginia, member of American Legion Post 16, and a member of Lynchburg Elks Lodge # 321. Howard proudly served our country during WWII in the Pacific Campaign as a member of the US Army. He was a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church. Howard was a very kind person with a heart of gold, who always had a smile on his face and enjoyed helping others. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday February 26, 2012 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 1:30 PM on Monday, February 27, 2012 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Dr. Robert Putt and Rev. James D. Newman officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family would like to thank the staff of the assisted living at the Summit, and Centra Hospice for the loving care given to Howard while he was in their care.
