Hubert Arthur Roberts, 90, of Bedford died Friday, February 21, 2014 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Hubert was born in Bedford County, the last of eleven children of the late Thurston Eugene Roberts and Mary Gypsy Nance Roberts.
Active in community affairs, Hubert was baptized at the Bedford Baptist Church in 1938. He was a lifelong dedicated Democrat, a retired employee of Rubatex Corp., a member of the Bedford Elks Lodge #2844, a former member of the Bedford County Board of Supervisors, Past President of the Bedford Fire Department, Past President of the Public School P.T.A. and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army.
Hubert was preceded in death by his ten brothers and sisters, Lucy Thurman, Joanne Arthur, Evelyn Dinwiddie, Willie Mae Creasy, Helen P. Hawkins, Lillian Obenchain, Kenneth Earl Roberts, James Wesley Roberts, Howard L. Roberts, and Thurston N. Roberts.
Hubert is survived by his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth \"Liz\" Whitten Roberts, his sons and daughters-in-law, Chester A. and Margaret Roberts of Carefree, AZ, Robin V. and Sherry Roberts of Safety Harbor, FL, Curry A. and Irene Roberts of Richmond also two grandchildren, James Garrett Roberts and Hayden Elizabeth Roberts both of Richmond and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at the Bedford Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. David L. Henderson officiating. Following the service there will be a reception in the church fellowship hall. Private burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park with military honors.
