Hugh Francis Coll died peacefully in his home on November 27, 2015. He was born on February 4, 1931, in Seattle, Washington, a son of the late Edward Patrick and Amiee Lawson Coll.

Hugh is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sarah Gibbons Coll; his son, Mike Coll; his daughter, Lea Barksdale and her husband, Billy; three granddaughters, Hollis Capshaw (Bill), Spencer Rogers (Ben), and Libba Guza (Will); his four great-grandsons, Cole, William, Lawson and Stowe; his brother, Anthony Coll; and two sisters, Shelia Jamison and Georgia Marschat.

He was a graduate of Tuscaloosa High School and The University of Alabama. After proudly serving his country in the Navy during the Korean War, Hugh began a long career with Sears, ending with his retirement.

Hugh was especially proud of his heritage. His second cousin on his father’s side was Eamon de Valera, the President of Ireland from 1957 to 1973. Hugh’s uncle on his mother’s side was the famed author and illustrator, Robert Lawson. Among his works were illustrations for Ferdinand the Bull and Mr. Popper’s Penguins. He received the Newberry Medal for his book, Rabbit Hill, and the Caldecott Medal for They Were Strong and Good.

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the loving care given by Dr. John MacNeill, the wonderful staff of the Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center, and Centra Hospice.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Monday, November 30, 2015, at the home of Lea and Billy Barksdale, 1050 Greenway Court. A private family service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 2314, Lynchburg, VA 24505; Daily Bread, 721 Clay Street, Lynchburg, VA 24504; or the Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center, 1920 Atherholt Road, Lynchburg, VA 24501.
