Irene M. Coe passed away on Friday, August 18, 2023 in her home at The Summit in Lynchburg, VA. She passed peacefully, surrounded by her children.
Irene Elizabeth Mitchell was born on September 15, 1928, to Theodore Oliver and Thelma Katherine Benckert Mitchell in Scranton, PA.
Irene graduated as Valedictorian from Central (academic) High School in Scranton. She went on to graduate Cum Laude from Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA. Irene later earned a degree in Education from the University of Pittsburgh. She became a much-loved elementary school teacher in Crafton, Pa for 23 years. Later, she spent 22 years in retirement in Beverly Hills, FL as an active volunteer. She was an active resident at the Summit. Irene was an avid bridge player and very well-read. She was a supporter of area charities, including Daily Bread in Lynchburg.
After completing college, Irene relocated to Pittsburgh, PA to work and pursue a master’s degree at Carnegie Tech. It was here that she met her husband, John Henry Coe, Jr. on a blind date at a church party. They married on June 16, 1951 and were married for 65 years. She was the beloved mother to 5 children: Linda S. Doriani (Paul) of Minneapolis, MN, Richard A. Coe (Willa) of Lynchburg, VA, Roger Park of Lynchburg, VA, Cynthia L. Stewart (Scot) of Huntersville, NC, and the late Candace J. Coe.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, her husband, “Jack”, and her sister, Marie Rowlands of Mt. Clemens, MI. She is survived by 4 children, her brother, Gilbert C. Mitchell of Elmira, NY, and two sisters-in-law: Joan Dean of Torrance, CA, and Virginia Ellis of Issaquah, WA.
Irene was a devoted grandmother to 11 grandchildren and to 18 great-grandchildren, to date. She always remembered special days with beautiful greeting cards.
