Isabelle Horton Scruggs
Isabelle Horton Scruggs, 94, of Lynchburg died Wednesday, January 26, 2011, following a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late Frederick Thornton Scruggs. She was born November 11, 1916, in Lynchburg, Virginia.
She graduated from Randolph Macon Women\"™s College in 1937 and started her teaching career in Campbell County and later in Fairfax, Virginia. She returned to Lynchburg soon after World War II began and got married. Her husband was shipped overseas to Europe for the next three years and she resumed teaching and selling war bonds throughout Central Virginia. After the war the family moved to Chicago, Illinois where she raised her family and later returned to teaching. The family returned to Lynchburg in 1967 and she became the librarian at Garland-Rhodes School until she retired. She was a member of St. John\"™s Episcopal Church, a past president of the Episcopal Church Women, a member of Oakwood Garden Club, the Lynchburg Retired Teachers Association, a docent at the Maier Museum of Art and active in many other civic organizations.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her mother, Nora Shepherd Horton, and father, Frank Corbett Horton, of Lynchburg and a brother, Frank C. Horton, Jr. of Huntington, West Virginia. She is survived by her daughter, Diane S. Garmey of Lynchburg and her son Rick Scruggs and his wife Kandy of Forest; along with six grandchildren: Trevor T. Garmey, Erin Garmey Ferrell and her husband Bryan, Sarah Scruggs, Courtney Scruggs, Sara Sumner, Evan Sumner and two great-grandchildren: Hayden Ferrell and Julia Carter Ferrell.
The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to Ana and George Hatmaker for the special care they gave to Isabelle and to express their deepest gratitude to her loving caregivers, Marina Martin, Vickie Litchford, Angela Pennix, Tammy Smith, and Carla Litchford.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 \"" 7:00 PM on Friday, January 28, 2011, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at St. John\"™s Episcopal Church, Lynchburg with the Rev. Diane E. Vie and the Rev. Marion Kanour officiating.
