J. S. “Jake” Hunter

J. S. \"Jake\" Hunter, 86, of Bedford, died on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at the VA Medical Center. He was born May 13, 1925 in Dooley County, GA, a son of the late John Stark Hunter and Margaret Caledonia Welch Hunter.

Jake was a member of Cornerstone Church of Christ and a retiree of Owens-Illinois Paper Mill in Big Island with 33 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge.

Jake was preceded in death by a son, Phillip Hunter. Jake is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Tillman Hunter; four children, Don Hunter and his wife, Donna of KY, Phyllis Lawton and her husband, Tom of Goode, Jeff Hunter and his wife, Bev of Bedford and Lynn Dalton and her husband, James of Lynchburg; thirteen grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children\"™s Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept. #142, Memphis, TN 38148.

A celebration of Jake\"™s life will be conducted at 11 AM, Saturday, November 19, 2011 at the Tharp Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Dr. David McCord officiating. Burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park with military honors given by American Legion Post #16. The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM, Friday, November 18, 2011 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, 586-3443.
