Jack Churchill Carpenter

Jack Churchill Carpenter, 86, of Bedford, died Thursday, February 7, 2013. Born August 17, 1926, in Jackson, MS, he is a son of the late William Churchill Carpenter and Myrtle Latham Carpenter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Dora Lee Comer Carpenter; a sister, Martha Belle Parker; and a brother, William Lawrence Carpenter.

Jack attended high school in Macon, MS. Following his high school days, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served for four years. He then enlisted with the U.S. Air Force for 23 years achieving the rank of Staff Seargeant. A portion of that time was served during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Air Force in 1971. Following retirement he moved to Bedford, Virginia. He worked at RPS Auto Supply in Parts, and then as manager until the store closed in 1975. He also worked for Southern States, Fisher Auto Parts and Winn Dixie.

Jack was a volunteer at Runk & Pratt retirement home in Bedford, assisting with the activities such as bingo games and visiting with the residents.

He was passionate about his yard work and gardening. He was very proud of the featured article published in the Bedford Bulletin focusing on his successful gardening techniques. Jack was known for his infectious smile, sense of humor, and generosity to everyone he met. He most enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and always had a soft spot in his heart for animals.

Jack is survived by his only son, Kevin D\"™wayne Carpenter and his wife, Tammy Lee, of Green Bay WI; three sisters, Helen Triplett, Earline Grae Graham, and Virginia Swanson; a grandson, Austin Churchill Carpenter, of Green Bay, WI; three nephews and a host of dear and special friends.

A special thank you goes to the doctors and nursing staff at Bedford Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care shown to Jack during his stay.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 9, 2013, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home.
