Col. Jack Lewis Price, Sr., USAF Ret., 84, of Goode, passed away Monday, February 13, 2012. Born August 27, 1927, in Gate City, VA; he was the husband of the late Patricia Ann Callan Price and a son of the late Clarence Rothelle Price and Ruth Ann Haynes Price.
Jack proudly served this country with a long and dignified military career. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1944 and attended VMI for one year. He then served on active duty in the Philippines for a brief time before his appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1951, beginning his Air Force career as pilot and engineer. Upon graduation from flight school in August of 1952, he served with distinction in the Korean Conflict flying an F86. Jack became an instructor pilot and again distinguished himself in the Vietnam War flying an F4 Phantom. In addition, he earned his Master of Science degree from MIT in 1958. He was a design engineer for guidance and electronics for Air Force missile systems. Jack received three Legion of Merit awards and was a recipient of a Bronze Star Medal. He was recognized as a founding father of the Global Positioning System. Jack was inducted into the Order of the Daedalians in July 1978.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Patricia Ann Callan Price, his aunt, Mrs. Clara Price Hood; his sister, Evelyn Frances Grayson; his sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Joan Callan Johnston; and his niece, Mrs. Nancy Johnston Amos. He is survived by a daughter; Patricia Ellen Garcia and husband, Walter of Pittsburgh, PA, a son; Dr. Jack Lewis Price, Jr. and wife, Debra of Rockville, MD, six grandsons; Callan Garcia, Timothy Garcia, Daniel Price, Andrew Garcia, Jared Price, and Garrett Garcia, four great-grandchildren; Asa, Teresa, Eden and C. Rafah, a brother; C.R. Price, Jr. and wife, Carol of Alpharetta, GA, a brother-in-law; Verle Johnston of Goode, VA, a sister-in-law; Nancy Callan McCarthy of Nicholson, PA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Jack will be dearly missed by his friends in the parish family of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, Goode Ruritan Club, Tharp Funeral Home\"™s New Beginnings, and at the Shepherd\"™s Table. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jack\"™s memory to any of these organizations.
Father Salvador Añonuevo will officiate a Funeral Mass at Holy Name of Mary, 10:00 AM, Saturday, February 18, 2012 followed by a Cryptside service at Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Tharp Funeral Home, 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, February 17, 2012. A Rosary will be prayed at 7:45 PM.
