James A. \”Œjim\” Lampman

James A. Lampman, 65, of Lynchburg, VA, went home to the Lord on Wednesday February 10, 2010, at Lynchburg General Hospital, following an illness. Jim was born in Chardon, Ohio September 1, 1944, the son of the late Paul Lampman and Ethel Roach Lampman.

He had an impressive educational background. Jim earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1968, in Political Science from Eastern New Mexico University. In 1969, he earned his Masters Degree from Eastern New Mexico University and then he completed his Ph. D. in 1972, from the University of Tennessee.  Before becoming owner of Virginia Aviation in 1988, he was a Professor and Department Chair in Political Science at Central Virginia Community College for 20 years.  He also served on the Hollins Research Foundation Board at Hollins College in Roanoke, Va. and FIT TO FLY Medical Practice, Farmville, Va. 

Jim was an \"educator\" and throughout his career of teaching and business ownership, he was an avid aviation enthusiast, educator and helped promote aviation throughout central Virginia. His aviation history consisted of various ratings including:  Airline Transport Pilot Single & Multi-Engine, Type Rating CE-500 Jet, also Instructor ratings including:  Gold Seal, Certified Flight Instructor, Flight Instructor Instruments, Multi- Engine Flight Instructor, Basic Ground Instructor, and Advanced and Instrument Ground Instructor. FAA Appointments included:  Air Carrier Check Airmen, Accident Prevention Counselor, and Airmen Certificate Representative. His flight hours included:  Total Flight Hours 12,432, Instruction Given 5,281, Single Engine 8,000, and Multi-Engine 6,000.  He also gave 582 Air Carrier check rides and 235 Airmen Certification check rides.

Jim will be greatly missed by his many loyal friends and his Virginia Aviation employee family.  We were truly blessed by his mentoring.

There will be a memorial service in his honor Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Virginia Aviation (970 Airport Road), at 3:00 p.m. in the General Aviation Terminal. His final resting place will be beside his parents in Lovington, New Mexico.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or FIT TO FLY Medical Practice, Farmville Regional Airport, 130 Wedgewood Drive, Farmville, VA  23901, telephone 434-392-1745.  This is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping pilots maintain their required FAA medical certificates.
