James Albert Lyle, Jr.

September 19, 1923 — December 20, 2016

James Albert Lyle, Jr passed away in his home at Westminster Canterbury at the age of 93 on Dec. 20, 2016.  He was preceded in death by his parents, James Albert Lyle and Kathleen Fore Lyle, his son, James Albert Lyle III and his wife, Jean McCausland Lyle.

He is survived by two children, James Earle Lyle and Kathleen Lyle Falls, their spouses Belinda Chin and Dr. Randall Keith Falls and five grandchildren, Jeffrey Anderson Lyle, McCausland Chin Lyle, Dr. Randall Keith Falls, Jr, William Frederick Falls and James Alexander Falls and his cousins Lit Gill and Leighton Robertson.

Al was born in Richmond, VA but grew up in Riverside, IL where he fished, played football and was granted the rank of Eagle Scout. However, his summers were spent at Timberlake fishing and swimming with his cousins Bobby and Leighton.  He always considered himself a Virginian. After 1 year at VMI, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he became a flight instructor. After the war he received his BS in mechanical engineering from VPI. In 1950 he married the love of his life, Jean. Living in Forest, he was a lifelong member of St Stephen’s Church and a member of the Brookville Lions Club.  He was on the Bedford County school board from 1960 to 1973.  He cared for his mother and her sister in their final days. At Westminster Canterbury, he handcrafted walking sticks and sold them, giving 100% of the money to the Westminster Canterbury Employee Education Fund.  His life was defined by faith, devotion to family and service to his community. The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the entire staff of Westminster Canterbury. Each and every staff member knew and called him by name and treated him with dignity and respect. We would particularly like to thank Leighton Robertson, Jackallen Arthur, Charlotte Fischer, Molly Jenkins, Dr. David Smith, and Anna Tomlin for their devotion to Al.

A celebration of Al’s Life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 14, 2017 at St. Stephens, Episcopal Church, 1695 Perrowville Road, Forest, Virginia.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
