James Carlton “J.C.” Winebarger, 86, of Lynchburg passed away February 3, 2017. He was the husband of Joan Caudle Winebarger for 36 years.
J.C. was the youngest child of the late Jason Leroy Winebarger and the late Sarah Smith Winebarger. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served as an airplane mechanic during the Korean War. Upon his return to the states, he worked for Winebarger Corporation, where he custom designed and built machines for the manufacturing of church furniture. A self-taught mechanical engineer, J.C. later worked from his “shop,” creating custom machinery for areas businesses. He enjoyed working with anything that had moving parts from heavy equipment to delicate antique clocks.
In addition to his wife, “Jo,” J.C. is survived by four children, Sandra White (Dicky), Debbie Bozeman (Steve), Diane Austin (Robert), and Marie Ward (Herbie); Joan’s children, Carla Weisse (Michael), Susan H. Renfro, and Daniel R. Hicks (Renae). He was “Papa J.C.” to twenty grandchildren, twenty seven great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. J.C. is also survived by a sister, Vera Nordstrom; a special first cousin, Riley Todd (Louann); his loyal canine companion, Sunny; and a host of other family and friends.
J.C. was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters; one son, Victor Winebarger; three grandsons, David Brooks, Chris Powell and Shane Bozeman; and one great-grandchild, Farrah Cook.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Della Hunt of Centra Hospice for her care and compassion in caring for J.C. and to Pastor Carl Weiser for his service and comfort to J.C. and his family.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, with Pastor Carl Weiser officiating. A reception will follow the service.
