James Alfred Dinkel, 80, of Lexington, formerly of Bedford, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at Lewis Gale Hospital. He was born in Bedford on May 13, 1944, to the late Benjamin Thurston Dinkel and Vina Virginia Welch Dinkel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Susanna Mercer Dinkel; sisters, Doris McManama and Mildred Overstreet; brother, Lewis Dinkel.
James was born and raised in Bedford and worked for many years at Adams Construction Co. He was a member at Bible Truth Tabernacle. James loved to play the harmonica and sing, especially at church. Above all, James loved the Lord and said that meeting him was the one appointment that he would never be late for. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his children, Angela Marie Simmons, Karen Dinkel Jones, James Gregory Dinkel (Pam); four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; brother, Russell Dinkel; sisters, Reva Wheat (Owen) and Linda McGhee (Larry) and many nieces and nephews who loved him.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Bobby Jones, Patrick Patton and Carilion Home Health for the special care and support they gave.
A funeral service will be conducted at 12 noon on Friday, June 21, 2024, at Tharp Funeral Chapel, Bedford with the Rev. Wayne Lawhorn officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
