James Donald \"Don\" Duncan, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away at The Carrington, on Friday, July 9, 2010 at 83 years old.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Coleman Duncan, and their three children, James Patrick Duncan of Spartanburg, S.C., Donald Coleman Duncan and his partner Debra Jones of Fairbanks, AK, and Rosalind Duncan Braza and son-in-law Joseph Braza of Doylestown, PA, as well as three grandchildren, Patricia Nicole Duncan of Buenos Aires, Argentina, James Duncan Braza and Sarah Ann Braza of Doylestown, PA.
Don was born in Dublin, Virginia to Jack and Gladys Duncan and graduated from Pulaski High School in 1944 and Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Metallurgical Engineering in 1950. He served in the Army\"™s 6th Signal Company in World War II and in the 780th Field Artillery Battalion and Fort Belvoir Engineering Research and Development Laboratory in the Korean War. He worked at Reynolds Aluminum in Phoenix, AZ and Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, N.M. At Babcock and Wilcox, he worked as a manager in Engineering, Quality Control, and Project Management, from 1956 to 1981. He also attended the Executive Management Program at University of Virginia\"™s Darden School.
Following retirement, he joined his son James at his business in S.C. He retired again to his home at Smith Mountain Lake and later moved to Stonegate Villas in Lynchburg. He volunteered with Junior Achievement, United Way, Civitan Club, and Lynchburg Area Development Committee. Don enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting, and travel, especially to Alaska.
We thank the aides at The Carrington and his private caregivers, especially Michelle, for their years of caring service.
There will be no public funeral service or visitation. A private memorial and burial service will be held for family only, out of town.
