James E. Davis, Jr.

James E. Davis, Jr., of Lynchburg, Virginia, transitioned to his heavenly home on Monday, November 30, 2020 in Myrtle Beach, SC. The middle of five children, he was born on December 31, 1955, to the late James and Maggie Davis.
James attended Fifth Street Baptist Church with his family from childhood. Moved by the servant spirit of Reverend Ricky Linthicum he later joined Amazing Grace Outreach Church. He received his education from Yoder Elementary and Dunbar High Schools, where he excelled in mathematics. He served his county as an US Army veteran.
James was raised on Tinbridge Hill and was fondly known by many as David. He was affectionately called “Uncle Dave” by his family and many bonus nieces and nephews all over the city. He often took credit for helping to raise the younger generation of kin folk. He was extremely proud of his African roots and heritage and was always ready to break out some eccentric dance moves. Known to be a sharp dresser, his trademark was to always have a crease in his pants. James referred to himself as a handyman and thoroughly enjoyed cooking and cleaning for others. He never let a day go by where he didn’t make a quick hustle or try to be a blessing to someone in need.
James will be remembered for his kind and gentle demeanor. Determined to live life on his own terms, he left us with some incredible stories of his life’s journey that will be reminiscences for many years to come. He loved to walk and could be spotted anywhere within the city limits making strides with his backpack in tow. He always carried something to defend himself, just in case someone wanted to test his gangster. He was frequently favored by Lady Luck on scratch and lottery tickets, and made sayings such as “ain’t that pitiful,” “whoa-doe,” “beau-ti-ful,” “shawty,” and “youn-know” popular catch phrases.
He was preceded in death by his sister Berta “Pam” Davis and Lila Davis. He leaves treasured memories to a special circle of family that includes his loving daughter, Kizzy Brown and son/best friend, DeWayne Brown of Lynchburg, VA. He was the proud grandfather of Kiarah Brown, Simeria Brown, and King Brown all of Lynchburg, VA; a sister, Delmonica Humphries (Melvin); a brother, Jerome Davis (Melody) all of Lynchburg, VA. In recent months, he was blessed to develop a special friendship with Valerie Harris of Lynchburg, VA. James is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends that will forever cherish his memory.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Thursday, December 31, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. at New Dearington Baptist Church 400 Smyth Street, Lynchburg 24501.
