James Edward Thornhill, Sr. went to be with his Lord, Saturday, March 12, 2016. He was the devoted husband of the late Glora Howell Thornhill.
Ed was born in Lynchburg, April 1, 1924 a son of the late Robert Daniel Thornhill, Sr. and Maude Steuart Thornhill. Ed honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and graduated from the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the Jefferson Society. Ed retired from Babcock & Wilcox, NPGD, after working as a Principal Electrical Engineer. He was an avid historian and was considered an expert genealogist. He loved flower gardening, collectibles and antiques. Ed was a member of Peakland Baptist Church.
He is survived by his children: Liz Jennings of Forest, Trish Poole and her husband Tim of Pearisburg, Jim Thornhill, Jr. and his wife Pam of Madison Heights, and his son-in-law Dale Shull of Richmond. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Will Jennings and wife Holly, Kristen Thornhill, Ivan Shull, Bryan Poole, James Thornhill, III, and Oksana Poole, a sister-in-law Elizabeth Thornhill of Lynchburg and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter Cathy Shull, a son George Thornhill, three brothers: Robert, Charlie, and Roger Thornhill.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. tonight, Monday March 14, 2016 at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg.
A Celebration of Ed’s Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday March 15, 2016 at Peakland Baptist Church with Dr. Jim Hunter officiating. Inurnment will be at the church columbarium.
