James Gray Jones

James Gray Jones, age 89, died Friday, April 12 at Westminster Canterbury of Lynchburg, VA. 

Born in Lynchburg on September 21, 1923 the son of late James Albert Jones and Sadie Galloway Jones, he was preceded in death by wife of 52 years Annette Terrell Jordan Jones and brother Robert Cary Jones.

Mr. Jones is survived by three daughters, Anne Riely Popper and her husband Serge of Bedford County, Terrell Fitzgerald and her husband Rick, Claudia Gray Patterson and husband Tulane all of Lynchburg; seven granddaughters and one grandson, Jennifer Popper, Bess,  Nellie and James Gray Fitzgerald and Elizabeth, Anne, Catherine, and Mary Alexander Patterson.

Mr. Jones was educated in Lynchburg City Schools, graduating from E.C. Glass High School in 1941.  He attended Virginia Tech. He worked for the Navy in the Naval Operations Base in Norfolk, VA during World War II.  He worked for City for Lynchburg for 23 years and was the Director of the Public Utilities Department. Following, he did consulting work for a number of years.  He retired as the Administrator of the Bedford County Public Service Authority. He was active in the Boy Scouts and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.  He was a member of St. Paul\"™s Episcopal Church for more than 80 years.  He served on the vestry and sang in the choir for about 30 years.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul\"™s Episcopal Church, 605 Clay ST, Lynchburg, VA 24502-2447 or a charity of their choice.

Service arrangements are incomplete and will be announced in May.
