James “Jim” Herman Newland Sr., 94, of Lynchburg, died Thursday, April 16, 2015. He was the husband of Margaret Stratton Newland for 62 years.
Born Tuesday, July 20, 1920, in Hazard, Ky., Jim was a son of the late Joseph Mitchell Newland and the late Margaret Pelfrey Newland.
In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his children, James H. Newland, Jr., of Lynchburg, Paul A. Newland and his wife, Melody, of Lynchburg, J. Lee Newland and his wife, Evelyn, of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, Jacob L. Newland and his fiancé, Hayley, of Lynchburg, and Daniel J. Newland, of Lynchburg; four sisters, Mary N. McDaniel, of Richmond, Va., Martha A. Newland, of Canada, Clara A. Elliott, of Lynchburg, and Sylvia E. Schlemmer and her husband, David, of Lynchburg; a brother, Harvey Elliott and his wife, Donna, of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Eula Newland of Lynn, Ind.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph M. Newland, Jr., and Charles Newland; and two sisters, Blanche E. Newland and Jean E. Newland.
Jim was a great husband and wonderful father and grandfather. He loved to help people. Being a co-founder of 7-Hills RV Club, he and Margaret loved to travel. He proudly served our country as a member of the U.S. Army and the Signal Corps. Jim was an Eagle Scout and later became a Scoutmaster. He worked for over thirty five years for National Cash Register, and was a member of Marshall Masonic Lodge #39 and Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
The family will receive friends from 3 until 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, 2015, at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg. A celebration of Jim’s life will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2015, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, with Rev. Chris Deneen officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
