James Edwin Humphries died peacefully at his home on Monday, October 17, 2011. He was the husband of the late Sandra Jones Humphries for 50 years, with whom he shared everything.
Jimmy was born in Creswell, England, on February 11, 1937, a son of the late James Edwin Humphries and the late Jessie Parish Humphries.
He worked for the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in Washington D. C. serving as Deputy Division Chief of Communications and Security from 1960 until his retirement in 1994. Mr. Humphries was a corporal with the Royal Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was discharged on February 25th 1958. In his younger years Jimmy, played soccer in England and was one of the first professional soccer players in the Washington, DC area. He was also an avid Redskins fan.
In 1994 Jimmy and Sandy moved to Lynchburg to be closer to family and made wonderful friends in the community. He was loved dearly and will be missed.
He leaves to cherish his memory: a daughter, Dawn Humphries Gordon and her husband James Montague Gordon; three grandsons: Daniel Simon Short; Ian Montague Gordon; and Duncan Edwin Gordon: a sister Sally Humphries Inns of Worcester, England and a brother Kenny, who preceded him in death.
Jimmy and Sandra\"™s wish was to celebrate their lives together.
A memorial service celebrating the love and life of James and Sandra Humphries will be conducted at 2:00pm on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, VA, with the Rev. James Gallagher officiating.
