James Lewis Slaughter

James Lewis Slaughter, 74, of Forest died Monday, September 5th, 2011, at his residence.

He was the son of the late Jack Marshall Slaughter and Nettie Maitland Slaughter of Richmond.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Patricia Sweeney Slaughter; a sister, La Verne Slaughter Lewis and husband John of Lake Placid Florida; two sons, Stephen Marshall Slaughter and wife Carol Hall of Christiansburg, James Brian Slaughter and wife Kelly Posey of Suffolk; Seven grandchildren, Jack Lewis Slaughter, Samuel Glenn Slaughter, Ethan Patrick Slaughter of Christiansburg, Daniel Joseph Slaughter, Theodora Manette Slaughter, Phineas James Slaughter and Quinlan Sweeney Slaughter of Suffolk; mother\""in-law Berniece Bottoms Sweeney of Richmond, Aunt Rosalie Bottoms Whitehead of Highland Springs and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A 1961 Chemical Engineering graduate of Virginia Tech, Lewis was a registered professional engineer in Virginia and North Carolina. He served in the US Air Force during the Berlin Crisis and was an officer in the Virginia Air National Guard. During his career he worked for Albemarle Paper Co. Richmond, Reynolds Metals Co. Waynesboro, ICI Hopewell, Reynolds International Mexico City, Wiley and Wilson Lynchburg, and was a founding partner in Master Engineers and Designers in Lynchburg. Later, he served as CEO and Chairman of the Board of the California Agricultural Power Co. where he also served as the President of the California Independent Power Producers Association. He then went to work for Trigon Engineering Consultants in Greensboro and most recently as an Independent Engineering Consultant.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00pm. Thursday September 8, 2011, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg.
